Female Jockeys

I still keep getting emails about a subject I mentioned a few weeks ago..Female Jockey's.

The reason behind this was because I had an email from someone who has since asked me not to mention his name (he lives by a female jockey so doesn't want to be lynched).

It read something like this...

Thanks very much Paul that cloak and degas or whatever it's name is could of done with a stronger pilot up last night if it's not a top rated woman jock up I won't be backing again using that format.

A few others have asked to be nameless, so if you want your name left out, just say.

If you want your name left in, just say.

Here is what I asked...

Do you put your money down on a horse being ridden by a female jockey?

If no, why not?

Here are a few interesting emails down below, so everyone feel free to comment, oh yes, keep it clean.

Bernard say's...

Female jockeys 100% yes Hayley Turner has given me some handsome wins Megan Carberry a big win in Ireland for Sandra Hughes the girls are always worth a look.

Harold...

Women jockies ...every sport in the world bar none ,,men are by far superior to women .. men are physically stronger ..women do the most important job in the world ..care for their children ..maternal instinct ..good fathers will never even come close to a good mother...darts ..snooker etc ...not physical but men are way ahead ..its in a mans d and a ...I never bet when a womans on board any of my horses never will ...

Tony...

Female jockeys, reluctant to back them but one or two are worth following, Hayley and
new girl Sammy -jo.

Slater...

If a horse can go the trip ,likes the going,is proven in the class of race or higher and the type of race.
If there's value in the odds .....I don't care who's riding it!!!
If the horse is proven in that type of race with more factors in its favour to do well than the rest of the field.it's worth investing.

Ben...

Also as for female jockeys it is simple- if the form stacks up then it's a
bet. Simple.
Again it's another variable to consider but if my selection is being
riden by a female jockey then that is my bet.

I find those who do not fully understand or think racing is a quick way to
profit usually discount female jockeys- much like football fans who shudder
with fear of female referees.(scary lol)
So thanks for another cracking email, and for continued and excellent tips.

(Thought I would leave that last bit in)

Phil...

Hi PaulThree names spring to mind who have been very successful this season , Sammy jo bell  , Rachel Richardson and Sarah Brotherton,

Phillip...

In reply to your question on Lady Jocks, there are good and not so good LJs just as there are amongst there Male colleagues, everyone has to learn. Just as there are horses that benefit from a Ladies handling, there are also those that require a stronger touch !

Mel...

HI PAUL Thanks for e/mails good read after 50 years of betting lady jockeys
there are 5 really top femails  I would sooner put my wagers on them than
some of these bent male ones, one had his licence back last year after a
long suspension and in my humble opinion is still up to his old tricks last
season for me the eyesight is poor im 80 now they have lasted well re mel

Alex...

re female jockeys.....here goes.....not sexist but...the best are generally (operative word being  generally) not as good as mr. average. ok no stats to back it up but as per a@+on, what he says! I will only back if one my best and trusted tipsters says so!   I will not pick one in a mixed race. that's it, my money, my choice, my excuse and I stick with it!   see you hiding in them mountains tomorrow a@+on!

Ron...

I always used to back Hayley Turner each way and get fair
returns but she gets so few rides nowadays that I wonder why trainers seem
to have deserted her since her accident. I don't know who her agent is but
the quality of her horses seems to be pretty poor and of course the more
losers she rides the worse her strike rate becomes, giving the impression
that she has lost her touch .

Perhaps the majority of trainers are still biased towards male
jockeys because the plumb rides on Saturdays are pretty much ridden by the
men. Sammy Jo Bell and Rachel Richardson are girls I look for when scanning
through entries but in the main they they seem to be used just to ride
horses that have reached a plateau at which they are no longer capable of
winning and are simply being run to bring their ratings down, using
"weak"females as a reason for the horses poor performance until it's in
with a chance again at which point the girls will be jocked off in favour
of a previous male rider or one out of the top 20 or 30 riders.

John...

Female jockeys are as good as men. They are not often put up on the very best horses so do not have an equal opportunity. I have no problems backing horses ridden by Sammy Bell, Hayley turner and Katie Walsh and Nina Carberry is excellent. Some of the female amayeurs are also excellent such as Sarah Brotherton.
I am sure that given better horses a female is quit capable of winning classics et al. Julie Krone more than held her own in the states.
In a male dominated sport the hard work of riding out and getting the horses race ready is done mainly by females.
If the horse is good enough to win it matters little who sits on its back and it is only exceptional jockeys such as AP McCoy Frankie Dettori and Jamie Moore to name a few who are especially gifted and get horses home who are perhaps not good enough to win.
You have probably opened a can of worms.

Chris...

Lady jockeys - I am a big fan but feel they lack the staying power to maintain success.  Sammy Jo Bell may prove that statement wrong.

Paul H...

Hi Paul,You asked for comments on female jockeys, well for what its worth here's my two-penneth, of cause I'll back a horse ridden by a female jockey but like horses ridden by male jockeys there are some I don't like and would rather not bet in the race because I feel the horse wont get a "proper" ride. There are some fantastic lady jocks out there who are giving their all to help the horse achieve the best possible position not just Hailey Turner and Cathy Gannon, I've been very impressed with Sammy-Joe Bell , Emma Sayer ,Gemma Tutty, the last two mainly ride for their mums and could probably do with more outside rides but they do very well with what they get to ride usually low grade handicapers.
Do you want an example of a bad rider ?  I know she doesn't ride now, Claire Balding, what a waste of space she was !! is what-ever , the only reason she EVER won a race was because she rode a million pound horse in a £2000 race. She managed to get beat several times on 1/4 shots races she should have won by 20 lengths.
Some horses do run better for a female, some don't, some pull to hard for a female, but can't we say the same for male jocks !! Don't get me wrong I'M no feminist probably far from it (chain-em to the kitchen sink I say) but surely if their is profit to be made and the horse is ridden by a capable jockey whether it's male or female, you back it with your hard earned don't you?

Richard...

People who do not back lady/girl jockeys are people who are - usually -
sexist by nature. They do not understand the sport and believe a woman's
place etc etc. They are sad people.
I regularly back lady jockeys whether it be the likes of Serena Brotherton
in amateur riders contests or up and comers such as Samantha Bell, Rachel
Richardson and Josephine Gordon. Currently I would place Cathy Gannon as
our best and very good lady jockey.
If you really do believe that women cannot ride to the level of men just go
to Ireland and watch Katie and Nina.

This shouldn't even be a debate. It's sad that it is.

Jules...

Hello Team,i would back a woman jockey, they are up and coming, especially in
america Breeders cup great example last year,in England we have some great
lady jockeys, and i cant believe how pretty some are,but i would look at
stable where lady jockey is riding,Richard Fahy uses samantha bell,if they
are with one stable as good as fahy then depending on horse form i would
not let jockey bother me man or woman,my buzz is winning, and finding
longshots,to look at all variables.

Pauljo...

High Paul & All...
Have been following Female Jockeys as Betting Propositions since some Research by the wicked Nick Mordin
(anyone know where He's writing currently)
some Years ago coincided with My political prejudices!
Mordin noted the Strike Rates of;
Female Jocks, esp. in Races featuring both Sexes;
Female Trainers, though S.R.s less rewardin';
Foreign Horses/Trainers//Jockeys, esp. in g.b. & Irish Group races;
Golden Rule: "Against The Crowd";
Use the Chauvinism & Xenophobia of g.b. punters to Your advantage!
Informative feature in this week's "Weekender" on Rachel Richardson (won on Thesme @ York ~ 20/1 taken! Thanx Rach!
'Nuff Said... for now.

Rigambler...

I have played many great female jockeys in the USA.
I prefer male jockeys in Europe because it is much harder riding there.
However, if a horse seems to respond to a certain female jockey,
I do not hesitate to bet them, provided their numbers are equivalent to their
male counterparts.
The amateur races are pretty decent venues for female jockeys also.

An amateur is an amateur regardless of the gender. Don't sell them short.

I hit a good race recently. The female rider was riding a very well hidden
47/1 post time long shot, which she had been riding right along in the wrong kind of races.
She was just a hair short of the big payoff as she finished a very close third,
( unfortunately, second place was only paid out to the top two finishers,
as there were a few too many late scratches in the race,
but I did collect some very decent payoffs by hitting two large OMNI bets
as I played her horse with the field as a cover bet. She fared much better next time out,
as  I caught her big time in the very next race under the same race conditions,
when she  followed it up with a very big win and exacta payoff.
Look up the horse SILVER SHUFFLE when she was 3rd at 47/1,
then followed that up with a $25 win price plus a very good exacta as well.

Like I say, please feel free to add any comments about the above subject, and who knows...We ALL might learn something.

As a lady, I feel that the female jockeys are not given the best horses to prove themselves. Hayley had a good win in South Africa recently, really fought to the finish. Nina is superb, she has guts
and determination. Sammy jo is proving herself a little belter and if the ladies were given a claim, like the fillies in the races, then maybe we would see more of them.

No problem with female jockeys at all some of them are very good.

Hi All.I don't have a problem backing horses with lady riders on.I have backed many winners with lady jockies on such as Bridget Andrews,Cathy Gannon,Nina Carberry,Katie Walsh,Hayley Turner,Jenny
Powell,Sammy Joe Bell and so on.After all,the Melborne Cup was won by a lady rider on a horse that was not exactly fancied at 100-1.

cathy gannon yes rides to the line i wouldnt bet some women jockeys as some men but cathy is as good as most of both

Never really considered if female jockeys are not as good as male jockeys, I tend to look at the horses form etc. I still back the horse if a female jockey is aboard.
Michelle Payne did a pretty good job winning the Melbourne Cup, so I would say yes, back the horse if you think it can win even if a female jockey is riding it.

Hi everyone, im under the impression that the quality of horse rides the ladies get are not quite the level the male jockeys get most of the time anyway, after living with a top lady horse rider all
be it equestrian, there competitiveness is as solid as the male jockeys, and just need a chance on the better horse, everyone has to start somewhere, and to get better you have to ride the better
horses, so come on you owners, give the girls a chance.

  • Paul (Monday, November 16 15 06:59 am GMT)

There are some valid observations within all of these comments and, as you would expect, some that are based purely on chauvinistic opinion.
Having owned several race horses spread between a few trainers, and got close to most of the people involved in the stables and several jockeys, I'm of the opinion that if the horse has trained well,
the trainer wouldn't put up an incapable jockey. Owners wouldn't be happy paying entry fees and transport costs if it were money down the drain, and whilst it is true that some of the female jockeys
appear to be weaker then their male counterparts, some of the males are far from perfect. Technique and an understanding of the horse is of much more importance than pure strength. The animals
needing out and out strength tend to be the ones that are more difficult to train. Lower class animals often have a mind of their own, some simply wanting to be allowed to run free, and others not
really interested in running at all. Higher class animals from top stables know their job and want to do it to the best of their ability; their jockey simply has to press the right buttons at the
    right time.

hi, i'm from oz. a female Michele payne road the melb cup winner. aust female jockeys do very well. strike rate is low because they don't get rides on good horses. some of our female jocks
consistently ride well priced runners to placings and win. no prob backing a female

  • Brian (Monday, November 16 15 11:47 am GMT)

I have backed Alex Greaves to win the Lincoln Handicap on Amenable at 22/1. I backed Hayley Turner on a 100/1 winner at Yarmouth and Emma Ramsden baled me out at Ripon with a 5/1 last race
    winner.
Total respect for female jockeys competing in a male dominated sport.

Give all female jockeys a 5 lb allowance, then we'd e have a level playing field.
